IV sedation is a form of sleep dentistry to help patients that suffer from nerves or anxiety. This method of sedation is also used for complicated dental procedures. Typically, the patient is partially awake, and can respond to verbal cues under IV sedation. At Mesquite Dental, we want our patients to feel comfortable and relaxed when they visit our office. Our team is highly trained, and is dedicated to providing quality dental care patients can trust. Mesquite dental continues to be the preferred dentist in Mesquite, TX, and we welcome new patients to our practice.

Patients may choose IV sedation if they have a strong gag reflex, or if they have to undergo a long dental procedure. IV sedation can also help patients that have a low pain tolerance, or those that suffer from dental anxiety.

How Does IV Sedation Work?

IV sedation is given intravenously and can be controlled easily by our dentist. IV sedation can produce moderate or deep sedation depending on the patient’s needs. Typically, the patient is awake during the procedure and can respond to physical touch and verbal cues. The process is quick and flows directly to the patient’s bloodstream. IV sedation is a safe method of sleep dentistry, and patients recover easily.

At Mesquite Dental we are a full-service practice, and offer the very best care for our patients. Dr. George has 20 years of experience in dentistry, and treats each patient like his own family. We offer financing options and a flexible schedule, allowing patients to be seen quickly.

IV Sedation

IV Sedation is an anesthetic drug that is injected into your veins. IV Sedation is the preferred method of sleep dentistry because IV sedation has many benefits. This method gives our doctor control to produce either deep or moderate sedation depending on the patient’s needs.

Benefits of IV Sedation

• Patient remains relaxed and calm, so our doctor can perform the procedure easily.
• Patient is usually awake during IV sedation and can respond to verbal or physical cues.
• IV sedation is a simpler way to keep patients relaxed compared to general anesthesia.
• No endotracheal tube is required.
• IV sedation causes partial memory loss, and patients will not remember their procedure.
• Recovery is fast and patients can return to their normal routine quickly.
• IV sedation is a safer option compared to general anesthesia.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia used in a dental office is the same method used at a hospital for surgery. If a patient is put under general anesthesia, they are unconscious. IV sedatives and gases are used to help put the patient to sleep before their procedure begins. An endotracheal tube is used to assist in respiration, and the patient’s heart rate and other vital functions must be monitored throughout the procedure. General anesthesia must be done by a skilled anesthesiologist, and is more involved compared to IV sedation.

General anesthesia involves many risks, and patients must follow certain pre-operative instructions to ensure the procedure runs smoothly. Typically, the recovery time for general anesthesia is longer compared to IV sedation, and it will take a patient longer to feel back to normal.

What Option Is Right for Me?

At Mesquite Dental we complete a detailed exam and review your health history before your procedure. Our team will discuss all of our sedation options, so the patient knows what to expect. Our preferred method is IV sedation due to the many benefits this method offers. IV sedation is effective, and helps patients that have dental anxiety complete their procedure easily. IV sedation is a safer option, and works well with each patient. Recovery is easier and patients can return to their normal routine relatively quickly after their procedure.

Mesquite dental is a full-service practice, and we provide personalized care in a gentle and welcoming environment. Your oral health is our priority, and our staff is highly trained to ensure your visit to our office is pleasant. We offer financing options for treatment, and use the latest technology and equipment in our facility.

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headaches
• Dry mouth
• Watery eyes
• Partial or full memory loss during the procedure
The risks of complications with IV sedation are very low, and our team monitors our patients very closely throughout the procedure to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Risks of IV Sedation

  • Air enters the vein through the IV injection site.

Small Cavities

If you have a cavity and are reluctant to call your dentist, you may be hoping the cavity will just heal itself. A cavity is tooth decay that causes a hole in the tooth. If cavities are not treated more serious issues can develop. At Mesquite Dental & Implant Center, it is important to take care of your oral health and practice good habits at home. Attending your regular cleanings and exams in our office can identify if you have any cavities, and make sure they are addressed promptly.

How Will My Small Cavity Be Treated?

If you have a large cavity, you will most likely need a filling. If the cavity is small and is causing you no pain or discomfort, we may be able to watch the cavity by comparing x-rays to determine if the cavity is active or arrested. Small cavities that are caught early on can be stopped with good oral hygiene. Taking care of your teeth with brushing, flossing, and using fluoride can help strengthen the enamel, and stop a cavity in its tracks.

Treatments for a Cavity

  • Fillings
  • Inlays or Onlays
  • Crowns
  • Root Canals
  • Extractions

What Can I Do To Reverse Decay and Prevent Cavities?

  • Brush and floss at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Increase your fluoride intake to help stop the cavity from further decay. Our office provides fluoride treatments, and fluoride can be found in toothpaste or mouthwashes.
  • Sealants can be applied to molars to prevent cavities from forming. This is a clear plastic protective coat that can help halt or reverse current decay on a tooth if the cavity is small enough and in the early stages.
  • Limit eating and drinking foods that have a high sugar content. These types of foods and drinks contribute to tooth decay. If you do consume these foods, make sure to brush right afterwards.
  • Visit our office twice a year for your regular cleaning and exam.

Interested in Scheduling an Appointment?

If you have a cavity that needs to be filled, or is causing your issues please do not hesitate to call our office. Leaving a cavity untreated can cause more serious issues if the cavity is not addressed promptly. Our flexible hours and schedule allow you to be seen right away. Your health is our priority and we welcome new patients to our office.
