The holidays are a wonderful time of the year. We get to spend time with our family and friends while enjoying delicious foods, exchanging gifts, and appreciating how lucky we are. This time of year can also be quite stressful. Between planning for parties, recitals, and shopping, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or to let some things slip through the cracks.

During the holidays, it is easy to let your dedication to oral health slip, but it is just as easy to keep your teeth happy and healthy all year round. Check out the following tips for better dental health over the holidays. If you need a dental appointment during or after this time of year, call the Mesquite Dental & Implant Center. We offer gentle, effective dental care for people of all

Limit Your Sweets

We aren’t here to tell you that you can’t enjoy seasonal sweets, we just want you to limit how much you have. Sugary treats can lead to tooth decay and cavities, which is probably not how you want to begin the new year. If you are going to enjoy a slice of fruit cake or a few candy canes, make sure to have a glass of water, too. Water can help keep your teeth cleaner, plus it is always a good idea to stay as hydrated as possible.

Watch What You Drink

Alcohol can dry your mouth out, which can increase the likelihood of cavities caused by tooth decay. If you are going to drink, do so in moderation and always remember to brush, floss, and rinse before going to bed. Heavy, sustained alcohol consumption has also been linked to a higher risk for oral cancer.

Non-alcoholic holiday drinks like eggnog are loaded with sugars, so enjoy them in moderation, too. If you want to have a sweet drink, have a glass of water afterwards.

Be Prepared

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the holidays and not have to pay for it later is to be prepared. If you know that you are going to be out enjoying drinks and sugary treats, bring a toothbrush with you. No one will notice if you sneak away for a minute to brush, and you’ll be doing your teeth a big favor. Fresh breath is never a bad thing if there is mistletoe around…
