How Hard Is It to Live With Dentures?

Living with some or all of your teeth missing can be stressful. Without our teeth eating or speaking may be difficult. Dentures are one of the many restorative solutions for patients that have missing teeth, and would like to restore their smile. At Mesquite Dental and Implant Center in Mesquite, TX, we offer our patients many restorative dental solutions, and we work with each patient to choose the option that best fits their needs.

Dentures are removable false teeth that give patients their confidence back, and allow them to enjoy eating and drinking as they would with natural teeth. Dr. George specializes in dental restoration, and provides patients with beautiful white smiles they can be proud to show off. Our detailed consultation process includes a comprehensive exam where our team will discuss your restoration options, and develop a customized treatment plan.

How Should I Care for My Dentures?

Dentures do require care to ensure they stay in good condition. Taking good care of your dentures prolongs their life, and keeps them functioning properly when they are in your mouth. When you invest in your smile, good oral hygiene plays an important role in keeping your dentures feeling and looking great.

Tips to Care for Your Dentures

Brush Dentures at Least Twice a Day

Take care of your dentures like you would your natural teeth. Cleaning your dentures twice a day helps to remove plaque and food buildup. Bacteria can cause odors or bad breath, and cleaning your dentures will remove any food particles that may contribute to odors. Make sure to also rinse the dentures after brushing to help keep your dentures clean and stain free.

Prevent your Dentures From Drying Out

If your dentures are not in your mouth they must be sitting in a cleansing solution or water to ensure they do not dry out. Dentures must be kept wet to ensure they remain in good condition and do not crack or break. Vising our office regularly can help to ensure your dentures are still functioning properly.

Brush Carefully Around Your Gums

Not only is it important to clean your dentures, it is also important to brush gently around your gums. Brushing keeps our gums healthy and also removes bacteria or plaque that may get stuck beneath your gum line.

What Can I Do to Get Use to My New Dentures?

When a patient is fitted for dentures we encourage them to practice speaking clearly to get used to their new device. Since your mouth is not used to having a foreign object around the gums, it may take a little time to train the muscles in your mouth to speak clearly. Do not get discouraged, any lisp or difficulty will go away with time as you adjust to your new dentures.

If you notice your dentures are slipping when you move your mouth in a certain way, it is important to gently bite down to set the dentures back in place. We do recommend patients that have repeated issues with slipping dentures to schedule an appointment with our office. We may need to take another look to ensure your dentures are fitting properly.
